Guide Dogs, in collaboration with Wild in Art, is proud to unveil an extraordinary art trail named Paws on the Wharf, currently running in Canary Wharf until 17th May 2024.
Paws on the Wharf aims to shed light on sight loss awareness while celebrating the profound connection between guide dogs and the individuals they support. The event features 25 guide dog sculptures, each intricately painted by a different artist, transforming Canary Wharf into a vibrant public art exhibition that champions creativity and inclusivity.
Inclusive Art Celebrating Diversity
These sculptures, adorned with vibrant colours and imaginative designs, not only showcase diverse artistic talent but also promote inclusivity by highlighting the importance of supporting individuals with visual impairments. Notably, five sculptures feature exclusive artwork by artists with sight loss, reinforcing the event’s commitment to diversity and representation.
To engage school-aged children, Guide Dogs collaborated with schools in Tower Hamlets for a unique sculpture design competition. The winning design from Ben Jonson Primary School, selected by an independent panel, will be brought to life by trail artist Jill Busby and displayed on the main trail, accompanied by a learning resource pack aligned with the Ofsted framework.
Accessible and Engaging Art Trail
Paws on the Wharf promises an enchanting experience for visitors, with sixteen sculptures located in Canary Wharf and nine spread across the wider Tower Hamlets borough. The event offers a range of accessibility features, including step-free access, alternative map options, and integration with the NaviLens App, allowing individuals with sight loss to navigate the trail independently.
The event will culminate in an exclusive art auction, offering attendees the opportunity to acquire unique pieces while supporting Guide Dogs’ vital services for individuals with sight loss. Funds raised from the auction will contribute to Guide Dogs’ ongoing mission to provide essential support to those in need.
Collaboration for a Purpose
Paws on the Wharf is made possible through a partnership with Wild in Art and the support of Citi, Canary Wharf Group, and Canal & River Trust. The event aims to raise awareness about Guide Dogs’ mission and promote inclusivity through art.
