New research from The Kennel Club, released for World Mental Health Day on 10 October, reveals the significant positive impact that dogs have on their owners’ mental health.

The findings highlight how canine companions help alleviate feelings of stress, anxiety, and loneliness, providing essential support for many who struggle with their mental well-being.

According to the study, nearly three-quarters (73%) of dog owners report that their dogs improve their mental health, while over two-thirds (71%) state that their pets help reduce anxiety. These findings underline the important role dogs play in promoting emotional stability and comfort in their owners’ lives.

Real-Life Impact of Dogs on Mental Health

Ellie O’Donnell, a 23-year-old from Horsham, credits her dog Lux with being a key factor in improving her mental health. Reflecting on her personal journey, she said, “When I got Lux, I had recently finished university and was really struggling to find myself. Going to training with Lux every Wednesday and Saturday, I found myself thriving again. Lux teaches me to be playful and see the fun in things.”

As someone on the autism spectrum, Ellie emphasised how essential routine is for her well-being. She explained that Lux brought structure back into her life and helped her regain a sense of normalcy. “Once I got Lux, I started to feel myself again,” she added.

The Kennel Club Calls for Hero Dog Award Nominations

To celebrate the many ways in which dogs positively affect the lives of their owners, The Kennel Club is calling for nominations for its 2025 Hero Dog Award. This award aims to recognise exceptional dogs who have made a remarkable difference, whether through providing comfort, support, or going above and beyond to assist their owners and others.

Bill Lambert, spokesperson for The Kennel Club, highlighted the significant role dogs play, saying, “Dogs continue to prove why they are called man’s best friend – and this research is just a snapshot of the many ways they help us. The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award celebrates the extraordinary impact our canine companions can have, whether through their unconditional love or through supporting those with disabilities.”

The Hero Dog Award not only shines a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of dogs but also provides funding to the winner and finalists through The Kennel Club Charitable Trust. This funding supports dogs, organisations, and charities that assist those facing challenges with mental health.
