The RSPCA is seeking information after a severely emaciated terrier was found abandoned in a crate in Maidstone.
The female Patterdale terrier, approximately one to two years old, was discovered by a member of the public on 18th August. She was immediately taken to a local veterinary clinic for urgent care.
The RSPCA’s Inspector Kirsten Ormerod, who is leading the investigation, described the dog’s condition as dire. “The poor dog was in a poor body condition and suffering from mange. She was infested with fleas, and the crate she was in was covered with her faeces,” Ormerod said. The terrier was so malnourished that all her ribs were visible, and she had experienced severe muscle wastage in her back legs, leaving her too weak to stand.
The dog, who has since been named Sprout by the veterinary staff, was not microchipped but was found wearing a distinctive red collar. The RSPCA hopes this detail might assist in identifying her previous owner.
Sprout is currently receiving treatment for her skin condition and is in the care of an animal centre where she is continuing her recovery. The veterinary staff reported that she has adopted a favourite toy, which has brought her some comfort during this challenging time.
The RSPCA is urging anyone with information about how Sprout came to be abandoned in the Park Wood area of Maidstone to come forward. Those with details can contact the RSPCA appeals line at 0300 123 8018.
