Royal Canin US and the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) have announced a partnership to educate pet owners on the importance of healthy treating and nutrition for cats and dogs.

The initiative aims to reinforce the human-animal bond by promoting safe and effective practices for treating pets, particularly those with specific dietary needs.

Dr Annette Louviere, Scientific Communications Veterinarian for Royal Canin US, highlighted the role of treats in enhancing the connection between pets and their owners. “Every pet owner has a special bond with their animal, and regularly giving treats to their pet plays a big role in strengthening that bond, showing love and spreading joy,” she stated.

Royal Canin’s approach focuses on nutritional care tailored to pets with conditions like lower urinary tract disease, gastrointestinal issues, food sensitivities, or weight management needs. The collaboration with HABRI comes as part of a seasonal campaign to share educational resources on responsible treating and the broader benefits of nurturing the human-animal relationship.

Treats and Pet Nutrition

With pets increasingly regarded as family members, nutritional value is a key concern for many pet owners when choosing treats. Steven Feldman, President of HABRI, emphasised the importance of maintaining pets’ health, particularly during the holiday season. “Our pets are family and keep us healthy and happy, which is why we need to do the same for them. Staying conscious of their diet is one way we can do that while also strengthening the bond,” Feldman explained.

While sharing human food with pets can be tempting, experts recommend avoiding it, especially for pets with specific dietary requirements. Improper treats can undermine the effectiveness of veterinary-prescribed diets and pose risks to a pet’s health. Providing treats designed specifically for cats and dogs helps ensure their nutritional needs are met without compromising their wellbeing.

Resources for Pet Owners

The partnership between Royal Canin and HABRI includes a suite of educational materials aimed at supporting pet owners. These resources include an article, a shareable infographic, social media content, and a webinar. The materials provide insights into pet nutrition, healthy treating practices, and the importance of the human-animal bond.

Dr Louviere encouraged conversations between pet owners and veterinarians to ensure pets receive the care they need. “Working with HABRI, our goal at Royal Canin is to encourage conversations with veterinarians about nutrition for overall health and wellness and educate pet owners about the benefits of the human-animal bond,” she added.

The collaboration underscores the importance of mindful pet care, offering practical guidance for owners to maintain their pets’ health while deepening their connection. By prioritising proper nutrition and treating practices, pet owners can ensure their animals thrive both physically and emotionally.
