Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has reported unprecedented demand for its services in 2024, highlighting the increasing need for pet care and support across Scotland.
The charity, which has been a community cornerstone since 1883, is tackling rising operational costs while continuing to serve an ever-growing number of pets and their owners.
Between September 2023 and August 2024, the organisation recorded nearly 400 new admissions, demonstrating the mounting pressures on its resources. During the same period, the Home distributed 44,960kg of pet food to food banks across Central and East Scotland, equivalent to the weight of a Boeing 737-800 airplane, ensuring pets could remain with their families during challenging times.
In total, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home delivered an impressive 495,207 meals to pets in need this year. Despite these pressures, the charity successfully rehomed 194 dogs and cats, showcasing its unwavering commitment to the welfare of animals in its care.
Mary’s Journey: A Tale of Transformation
One standout success story from 2024 is that of Mary, a stray dog found in September 2023. Arriving at the Home frightened and vulnerable, it was soon discovered that Mary was pregnant. With the care and support of the charity’s staff, Mary gave birth to six healthy puppies. All her puppies were successfully rehomed, thanks to the dedication of the Home and the generosity of its supporters.
After months of recovery and nurturing, Mary herself was placed with a loving family, marking a new beginning. Her story illustrates the vital role the Home plays in offering second chances to animals in need and emphasises the importance of continued community support.
Winter Appeal to Sustain Vital Services
As the harsh winter months approach, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has launched its Winter Appeal, aiming to raise £134,500 to sustain its services and care for animals during the colder season. Rising costs, including £22,000 for heating alone, have put additional strain on the organisation, with daily operating expenses reaching £7,000.
Lindsay Fyffe-Jardine, CEO of Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, called on the community for support, stating: “The community’s support is more vital than ever. This winter, we are calling on individuals and businesses to help us continue providing life-saving services. Every small action — from donating funds to organising a pet food drive — contributes directly to ensuring no animal is left cold or hungry this winter.”
Donations, even small amounts, can make a significant difference. For instance, £10 can cover essential vaccinations for a cat, while £150 is enough to keep all the Home’s dogs warm for a day.
A Legacy of Compassion
Founded over 140 years ago, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home continues to rely entirely on public donations to sustain its work. Its commitment to animal welfare has cemented its reputation as a lifeline for pets and their families across Scotland.
To support this year’s Winter Appeal and ensure the organisation can continue its essential work, donations can be made via the Home’s website at www.edch.org.uk/winterappeal or by texting WARMHEARTS to 70085 to contribute £10.
