The Kennel Club has announced the establishment of a new Regional Support Network, designed to enhance its support for canine event organisers.

The initiative divides the UK into six regions, each overseen by a regional advisor tasked with offering tailored guidance and resources.

The new advisors will replace the Field Officer role, with the network expected to be fully operational by early 2025. The six regions are:

  • North East and Scotland
  • North West, Ireland, and Isle of Man
  • East of England
  • Midlands and Wales
  • South East
  • South West

This marks a significant shift in how The Kennel Club collaborates with organisers of shows and societies, aiming to streamline services and focus on support rather than compliance.

A Shift Towards Personalised Support

Helen Kerfoot, Chief Canine Health, Activities and Events Officer at The Kennel Club, explained the motivation behind the initiative.

“We are very excited to have our Regional Support Network advisors in place. This initiative allows us to adopt a more supportive role with clubs and societies, rather than just focusing on compliance and enforcement,” she said.

Kerfoot highlighted the importance of grassroots communities in the dog world, noting that the new system aims to strengthen relationships with volunteers and make services more accessible.

The new approach is intended to create a more efficient and effective system, empowering canine clubs and societies by providing locally-based and personalised support.

Recognising Field Officers’ Contributions

While introducing the new Regional Support Network, Kerfoot acknowledged the work of the outgoing Field Officers.

“We are deeply grateful to the Field Officers for their support and assistance to the clubs. Last year alone, they carried out 254 visits across the UK, representing 7.5% of shows held, many of which received excellent reviews,” she said.

The Regional Support Network advisors will build on this foundation, focusing on collaboration with show organisers to deliver events more effectively.

The advisors will begin reaching out to clubs and societies in their designated areas early next year to gather insights on how best to provide support. Information about the network and contact details for the advisors will be made available on The Kennel Club’s website in the coming months.
