The RSPCA is seeking information following the abandonment of three neglected dogs in Merseyside.
The incidents, which occurred in early November, have raised concerns about animal welfare, particularly as winter approaches.
Two Chow Chows were found tied to a tree in Liverpool’s L36 area on 8 November, both in poor health with severely matted coats. Three days later, on 11 November, a French Bulldog was discovered underweight and unwell in the CH42 area of Birkenhead. The charity has urged anyone who recognises the dogs or has relevant information to contact its appeals line.
Deputy Chief Inspector Caren Goodman-James of the RSPCA described the situation as distressing: “All three of these poor dogs appear to have been severely neglected and then abandoned. It’s particularly sad to think that people could do this just as the weather turns really wintery and on the run-up to Christmas.”
Severe Neglect and Veterinary Intervention
The two Chow Chows, renamed Dalinda and Kaida, were microchipped, but their chips were not registered. Both dogs required sedation to remove their severely matted fur. Kaida also needed antibiotics for a bacterial skin infection, and both dogs received vaccinations and ear cleaning due to a lack of prior medical records.
The French Bulldog, named Cassie, was microchipped with details linking her to an address in the CH46 area. However, the contact number associated with her chip was no longer in use. Cassie, believed to be around two years old, was found malnourished with prominent ribs and spine. She received a body condition score of two out of nine and has been placed in emergency kennels.
Veterinary care has been crucial in stabilising all three dogs. Cassie, in particular, is being monitored to ensure she recovers from her weakened state.
Appeal for Public Assistance
The RSPCA is appealing to the public for information regarding the origins and circumstances of these dogs. Deputy Chief Inspector Goodman-James has asked anyone with first-hand knowledge to contact the organisation confidentially.
“We’d really like to hear from anyone who might know anything about any of these three distinctive-looking dogs,” she said. “If you have any first-hand information, please contact us via the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0800 123 8018.”
The organisation is particularly keen to learn whether Cassie was under veterinary care before her abandonment and whether there are other animals in need of assistance at her last known location.
Incident Numbers for Reporting
For anyone with information, the RSPCA has issued specific incident numbers. Details about Dalinda and Kaida, the Chow Chows, can be reported under incident number 01387158. Information about Cassie, the French Bulldog, should reference incident number 01391869.
The RSPCA’s appeal underscores the challenges faced by animal welfare organisations, particularly during the colder months, and highlights the need for community support in tackling neglect and abandonment cases.
