Kincardine-based charity Hero Paws, which supports retired military dogs, has been recognised with the Animal Partnership award at the 2024 Soldiering On Awards.
The awards ceremony, held on 16th October 2024 at the Park Plaza Westminster Hotel in London, honours the contributions of the Armed Forces community, including service dogs that have played a vital role in military operations.
Hero Paws was formed to provide support for dogs transitioning from military service into retirement. Initially focused on military dogs, the charity has expanded its services to assist retired dogs from other uniformed services and security or conservation organisations.
The charity was founded by a group of military dog handlers who understood the challenges these dogs face when leaving service. After serving in conflict zones and risking their lives to protect their human counterparts, these loyal animals often require specialised care to adjust to civilian life. Hero Paws provides the resources, expertise, and support necessary to ensure a peaceful and healthy retirement for these dogs.
A Night of Celebration
The 14th annual Soldiering On Awards brought together military leaders, government officials, and corporate supporters to celebrate the achievements of the Armed Forces community. Hosted by presenter and journalist Jeremy Vine, the event featured 12 award categories, with each recognising exceptional contributions from across the military world.
During the ceremony, the Soldiering On Academy was also launched. This new initiative aims to help economically inactive members of the Armed Forces community, including Wounded, Injured, and Sick veterans, return to the workforce.
The Work of Hero Paws
Hero Paws is dedicated to providing a bridge of support from service to retirement for these dogs. The bond between the dogs and their handlers is described as unbreakable, with many handlers leaving their careers to ensure these animals receive the care they need after their service. Hero Paws supports dogs through medical assistance, financial aid, and rehabilitation, ensuring they have the chance to decompress and live fulfilling lives in retirement.
Currently, Hero Paws is assisting 70 dogs and their families, with many more having been successfully rehabilitated and rehomed. These dogs now enjoy peaceful retirements, thanks to the ongoing work of the Hero Paws team and the medical and financial support they receive.
