A recent survey by Wagg, a dog food and treats brand, reveals the central role pets play in UK Christmas traditions.
The study found that over two-thirds of Brits (71%) are incorporating pets, family, friends, and even neighbours’ animals into their celebrations, reflecting the growing trend of pets being regarded as full members of the family.
The data also shows that pets are now part of many festive activities, including family photos, gift exchanges, and even enjoying their own Christmas stockings. These furry family members will be the recipients of gifts worth up to £60, with UK households spending nearly as much on their pets as on their human loved ones.
Wagg Brand Manager, Sarah Lyle, commented: “Christmas is a time for family, and for many Brits, that family includes their furry friends. At Wagg, we’re making sure no wagging tail is left out of the celebrations with our limited-edition Christmas treats for dogs.”
Pets Participate in Festive Traditions
Christmas traditions are evolving to include pets in meaningful ways. Nearly 29% of people ensure their pets feature in festive family photos, while 28% involve their animals in giving and receiving gifts. Over half (55%) plan to give their pets treats, and 46% will buy them toys.
For festive meals, caution remains a priority, with 36% of pet owners limiting their pets to animal-safe foods. However, 57% say it’s important to include pets in feasting, often preparing special meals or treats for their dogs.
The survey also found that pet owners are willing to spend generously on their animals, with an average budget of £59.80 per pet. This figure is close to the amount spent on human friends and 12% more than what is spent on cousins.
Pets bring joy and companionship during the festive season, with 63% of respondents saying Christmas wouldn’t be the same without them. Top activities that bring happiness to pets include spending more time with family (39%), going for walks (39%), and enjoying festive treats (38%).
