In the face of inflation and escalating pet food prices, a recent global survey conducted by Beneo reveals that pet owners remain committed to providing top-notch nutrition for their furry companions.
The study, conducted by FMCG Gurus on behalf of BENEO, surveyed 2,500 dog and cat owners across the UK, US, Brazil, Germany, and China, shedding light on the factors influencing pet food purchasing decisions.
Despite almost 90 percent of surveyed pet owners acknowledging a rise in pet food prices over the last year, only 1 in 6 has opted for cheaper alternatives. Instead, the majority continues to stay loyal to their preferred brands, leveraging promotional offers and larger packs. The research underscores that, for pet owners, factors such as ingredient quality, nutritional value, taste, and health claims take precedence over price considerations. Notably, more than half of respondents express a willingness to pay a premium for pet food featuring scientifically proven health-promoting ingredients.
Health-Conscious Pet Food
The survey underscores the significant concern pet parents have for their pets’ health, with over 80% considering their pet’s well-being as important as their own. Recognising the link between digestive health and overall well-being, more than 75% of cat and dog owners understand the positive influence of the digestive system on various aspects, including bone condition, mental and physical well-being, and the immune system.
Pet owners are increasingly prioritising a natural and proactive approach to supporting their pet’s digestive health. Over one-third of respondents feed their pets food featuring claims that support digestive health. On-pack claims such as “promotes digestive health naturally” and “easy-to-digest” hold substantial influence in purchasing decisions, highlighting the importance of specific benefits highlighted on packaging.
Proteins and Sustainability in Focus
Protein quality and content emerge as crucial factors for 7 in 10 respondents, while 4 in 5 owners consider sustainability claims when choosing pet food. With over 50% of pet owners viewing plant-based proteins as environmentally friendly, ingredients like faba beans gain relevance. Notably, more than 80% associate faba beans with sustainability, indicating a growing preference for natural and high-quality vegetal proteins.
Dr. Maygane Ronsmans, Product Manager Animal Nutrition at BENEO, emphasises the survey’s findings, highlighting that even amid inflation, pet owners prioritise nutritional value and health. Scientifically proven prebiotics and versatile plant-based ingredients enable manufacturers to meet consumer demand for innovative and relevant pet food products, aligning with the evolving landscape of pet owner preferences.
