Preseli Hills Cottages, a self-catering accommodation business in Pembrokeshire, has reported a significant uptick in bookings, attributing the surge to a recent addition to their services—pet sitting for dogs. The cottages are managed by Phil and Jennifer Wheeler and are situated in the Preseli Hills, 15 minutes north of Narberth. The location within the National Coastal Park attracts a variety of guests including nature enthusiasts, walkers, and those seeking a respite from urban life.
The business has been performing well over the last five years, but the introduction of dog-sitting services has led to a notable increase in enquiries. The Wheelers made this strategic adjustment in response to their guests’ needs for greater flexibility when it comes to pet care during their stays.
Jennifer Wheeler elaborated on the service, stating, “We’ve been pet-friendly ever since we set up. However, we recognize that while many of our guests are dog-lovers, they sometimes prefer to leave their pets behind when they go out for activities like romantic dinners or boat trips. We started offering pet-sitting services and the response has been significant.”
The Wheelers, who are also dog owners, have designed each cottage with pets in mind. The gardens feature Pembrokeshire stone walls at adult waist height, adorned with shrubs to act as barriers. Phil Wheeler pointed out that while these barriers are generally effective, guests whose dogs can jump higher than waist height should exercise additional vigilance.
In line with the upcoming National Dog Day on Saturday, August 26, the Wheelers have also created a guide detailing the best beach walks in Pembrokeshire, inclusive of advice on pet-friendly areas.
